Fisher’s Island New York
Fisher’s Island is an exclusive summer retreat that has maintained its private demeanor through generations. Our clients’ own 7-bedroom home hadn’t aged well, with dated wallpaper, dark oak paneling, and fir flooring throughout. It needed a sensitive refresh without obliterating original character, so we used a light touch, keeping old tubs and sinks, moldings, a fireplace, and door hardware. We brightened the floors and got rid of the eave molding to reduce visual chatter. By matching the ceilings to the walls with Farrow & Ball colors or wallpaper along with whimsical fabric curtains, the rooms are warmly enveloped and intimate. The bathrooms’ custom shower curtains and shades are both modern and reminiscent. The dining room’s wallpaper and drapery fabric by Josef Frank makes it feel as if the garden has begun indoors and by continuing through the new sliding pocket doors, views of the Sound are enjoyed on a sun-drenched dining terrace. An old wicker game table and chairs that had originally been in the home were faithfully recreated to remind the family of generations of games played on the porch. The home now combines the historic charm of the island with the family’s playful personalities.
